Default Holy **** It Lives (Ghost in the Shell)

I dunno about you guys, but I LOVE Ghost in the Shell. The original movie, followed by the second and series has always peeked my interest. One thing I alway apprecaited was the interesting design of weapons in a realistic fasion. The M-23, for example, is supposed to be the bigger brother of the P90. It looks just like it, except it's a bullpup magazine fed rifle with an interesting take-down feature so you can add a "unit B," a hard core alloy barrel to support HEAT rounds. Cool stuff. Point being - all the guns are based off a REAL weapon that I knew of.. Except one. The character Togusa uses this really quirky looking revovler with some unique features. NEVER heard of a "Matever," as it's called, in my life. Turns out that was a stupid translation error. It's called a "Mateba" in the real script. So I googled that and low-and-behold... A real counterpart. And it's almost EXACTLY like the one in the films o.o; Check it out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mateba_Autorevolver

Thought this was a cool little discovery for anyone who likes the series. I'm interested, at least o_O

Awesome. Yeah GITS is one of my favorite animes. Not as many as my friends like it but it appeals to the CS playing side of me. Although the gun above is certainly not used for "home protection".

Wow scary... accidentaly double posted and it turned into a... well it was showing my post x10.

Actually a .357 magnum is ideal for home defence round - crisp, clean, loud bang to alert everyone and it'll stop anyone dead in their tracks.

I kinda setteled for shorter version of that - the .357 SIG.

Also, I found that the Motoko's pistol from the original film is based on a Cezh pistol, and her M-5 from Stand Alone is almost exactly like another handgun designed to be mass produced yet extremely relieable.

I see. Eh I'm not much of a gun person so I wouldn't know that much. I can ID them, but that's about as far as my current knowledge takes me.

That's a neat looking gun. My gun knowledge extends to just about this:

They go boom boom and stuff comes out of them when you pull the trigger. And if you hit another person with it, stuff comes out of them.

That's where it cuts off for me.

Really rad gun, im not sure if ive ever seen him use it or not.. I never really pay attention to the gun, I pay attention to the guy whos getting the hell shot out of him. Gotta love that insanely unreal violence.

However the one thing i really want from that show is either the ability to speak though minds or of course a Tachikoma... some day, at least thats what I keep telling myself

The Mateba is an Italian revolver, I believe.
You can purchase them - they're a little on the pricier side.
It's basically a revolver that uses the blowback to rec0ck the mechanism allowing for single action fire with each shot (as opposed to double action where the trigger pull is heavier ... single action is generally used for target shooting (even with a DA revolver) only because it takes longer if you have to c0ck it manually).

All in all, that makes the Mateba seem like a desireable weapon .... it isn't - at least not for the purpose of self defense or combat. The design makes it bigger and bulkier than a revolver. And if you want a gun that uses the energy of a shot to rec0ck your gun you ought to be using a semiautomatic. The Mateba is more of a curiosity than anything else - it combines the worst features of the revolver and the semiauto ... It's a big, awkward, heavy gun with only a 6 round capacity that isn't much more powerful than anything else out there.

The rationale for the Mateba is the presumption that a revolver is more mechanically "reliable" than a semiauto ... which may have been true in the 1950s but not today. On the bright side I hear they're pretty accurate. But it's not a very practical weapon.

Firearms authority, Col. Jeff Cooper, says "(the Mateba) appears to be a classic example of a solution in search of a problem. This weapon has no discernible tactical purpose, but if its purpose is to sell, it has distinct advantages, the main one being that it is so wonderfully "cute." It is a classic "fun gun" to own, handle and shoot. One of its curious characteristics is that it fires from the bottom chamber of its cylinder, thus lowering the recoil thrust and reducing muzzle whip. Why this should matter is unclear, but its curiosity appeal is undeniable. "

BTW - Here's another thing about Ghost in the Shell from a gun-person. You'll notice the way Togusa has his gun holstered (far back with the butt facing out) - this is called cavalry carry - (back in the days when the right hand had a sabre, this allowed for the handgun to be drawn with the left hand). In modern times, however, the cavalry carry is bad since the act of drawing the weapon "sweeps the user's body with the muzzle" - i.e. the user can easily shoot themselves when drawing. Only posers and novices carry a handgun in this fashion nowadays.

Gun posers stand out because there's not a lot of "artistic freedom" in the way one ought to wear and use firearms. Modern tactics is more of a science than art - that's why true professionals in the field don't vary much in how they operate.

----------

Anime artists have a fetish for unusual weapons. The latest Appleseed film has a Poseidon shotgun - a sexy 12(?) ga magazine-fed shotgun that fires mini shotgun shells.

The real Poseidon never saw mass production, I believe, because if the user didn't grip it firmly and lean into the recoil the gun would not reliably "feed." It's a pity because this is one I would love to own if they ever worked out the kinks.

If you think the REAL Mateba is a POS, you should see the one Togusa uses more througholy. The cylinder opens UP, requiring two hands, and the weapon uses 9x19 pistol rounds instead of a powerful .357.

Also, I'm knowlagable of that shotgun - it's just crazy. It's actually a 10 gauge, gas piston shotgun. If that sucker was ever in my hands, I'd have to pass it on. A 10 gauge without any stock? OW.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that little factoid ... 9mm lmao!

Imagine this sales pitch ... how would you like to purchase a 9mm handgun - it weighs 3 lbs, has a 6 rd capacity and costs over $1000.

I think the Appleseed version claimed it was 10ga but the actual weapon was 12ga, I believe. Right now the only manufacturer of the 12ga minishells is Aguila Ammunition.

There was a review of the prototype in Armed Forces Journal that was a quite exciting read ... the link seems to be dead now, sadly. If I find the article again I'll have to download it.

I found the article:
From the text the gun sounds much different than the anime - in dimensions and operation (i.e. it's a different gun altogether). In fact it sounds like the modern Poseidon is a pump shotgun. You read and decide:

To me it sounds like a Saiga 12 to me. Sounds a LOT like a Saiga 12. Still an interesting development, though. OH, I also found a carbine version of the Mateba o_O Definetly for sport.
